Zakiyyah Sorensen

Zakiyyah Sorensen is a photographer who has discovered an unexpected passion for gardening. She's also a nurse and activist living in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband and sister.

As a nurse, Zakiyyah currently teaches full-time in the practical nursing program at Madison Area Technical College, where she started in January 2025. She prepares nursing students for patient care, drawing on her experience from various healthcare settings including public health nursing with Madison and Dane County Public Health Department, medical-surgical nursing at the William S. Middleton Veterans Affairs Hospital, and long-term care nursing at the Central Wisconsin Center.

She earned her BSN from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Nursing and specializes in sexual and reproductive healthcare and public health. Previously, she was Outreach Manager and Engagement Hub Director for UW-Madison's Collaborative for Reproductive Equity (CORE), where she built community networks and worked to translate research into community action using reproductive and knowledge justice principles.

Whether she's behind a camera lens, tending to her garden, or in the classroom, Zakiyyah brings the same dedication to nurturing growth and creating positive change in herself and her community.
